What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

The term ‘CBT’ is thrown around a lot, especially in the space of addiction treatment. But what exactly is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive behavioural therapy is an evidence-based treatment modality, using practical task-based methods to solve problems. These problems come in many forms, ranging from menial day-to-day issues and stressors through to serious family relationship conflict.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is designed to influence negative thoughts and behaviours by providing more positive and fulfilling solutions. They key to CBT is to address symptoms whilst present and to be supported with new skills, techniques and understanding that can be utilised in the ongoing recovery of addiction and co-occurring mental health issues.

How does CBT work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by teaching a person to challenge their cognition (thoughts) and their behaviours. CBT offers a holistic approach to mental health recovery, with the aim to assess and understand negative thoughts people may be experiencing about themselves and/or view of the world. These are to be exchanged with a more constructive belief system, and thus adjusting their thoughts and behaviours.

How effective is CBT?

CBT is an evidence-based approach and has been deemed a very effective treatment for the reduction of symptoms for a range of health issues, especially addiction, anxiety, depression.

A significant positive with cognitive behavioural therapy methods is that the lessons learned from CBT are ingrained in ones cognition (thinking) through the practise, and so make substantial on-going changes to one’s life. These practical coping strategies are also transferable so tools learned through treatment can have profound effects on many other areas of a person’s life, including, work, education and interpersonal relationships.
